Simon graduated with an upper second class joint honours degree in Genetics and Biochemistry (BSc) from Swansea University where he received an award for his work on quantitative genetics. He then remained at Swansea, achieving a distinction for his MSc in Nanomedicine. During his master's degree he undertook a 4 month research project in collaboration with the University of Houston, spending 3 months in the US, developing micropatterned silicon chips for the culturing of mesenchymal stem cells to be subsequently differentiated into insulin producing pancreatic islets.
