Three CDT students become ambassadors for STEMNET

Three CDT students --- Claire Lewis, Ioanna-Danai Styliari and Aleksandra Tchoryk --- recently became ambassadors for STEMNET (the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network). As ambassadors they volunteer in local schools to encourage pupils to enjoy STEM subjects, motivating and inspiring young people in these important areas. Talking about her reasons for joining STEM, Ioanna said “I decided to become an ambassador because I love communicating with children and I want to make them excited about science.”

Aleksandra and Claire participated in a one day event as part of British Science week at Mansfield library earlier this month which included a ‘science fair’ containing stands, each with different activities aimed to enthuse the students, catch their attention and get them asking questions. “Our stall,” Claire explains, “was aimed at demonstrating the principles of osmosis through creating a raw bouncy egg. The students could touch and bounce the eggs, and see the differences caused when leaving them in vinegar, golden syrup and coloured water, whilst myself and Alex explained the science behind what had happened.”

Ioanna’s first STEM activity involved visiting the Emanuel School and talking to pupils about Sound and Light and demonstrating how they are present in our everyday life. As part of a series of events to mark International Women’s Day, Ioanna also visited Fernwood School to motivate girls to stand out and to answer questions about their future careers.

The STEM activities were very rewarding for all involved. Claire said “I became involved in STEM work to share my passion and knowledge for science with others and to engage with a variety of audiences. It was a very fulfilling experience and left me with a smile on my face.” Ioanna agreed, saying “I want to intrigue them and show them what paths lie in front of them after school. I will be thrilled if all these activities mean that I will influence even one student’s life and make them enthusiastic about science!”
