Nanomedicines Workshop 2015 held at University of Nottingham
On Wednesday 15th April, Nanofar (Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Nanomedicine and Pharmaceutical Innovation) and UKICRS (United Kingdom and Ireland Controlled Release Society) held a one day Nanomedicines workshop.
Organised by the CDT Training Director, Dr Maria Marlow, Dr Cynthia Bosquillon, and CDT Project Officer Dr Claudia Matz, the workshop was designed to bring together students from Nanofar, the Centres for Doctoral Training in Advanced and Targeted Therapeutics, and UK postgraduates working in drug delivery/tissue engineering.
The agenda of the day focused on the translational aspects of nanomedicine, team working, and scientific debates/communication skills. Delegates also participated in two small-group workshop sessions.
Keynote lectures were presented by Dr Martin Garnett (University of Nottingham) and Dr Claire Thompson, Co-founder and Director of NanoScientium. Martin’s particular interest is in understanding how nanoparticles can be optimised for different applications but his work takes a broad look at many different aspects of nanoparticles. Martin read biochemistry at University College Swansea and continued with Ph.D studies on oxygen toxicity at University College London. Claire’s Pharmaceutical Industry experience spans large multi-national, virtual and contract research organisations. Claire is Chief Scientist of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She is Honorary Senior Lecturer in the College of Medical & Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. She holds a PhD from School of Pharmacy, University of Nottingham, and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of St Andrews.
