Year 3 and Year 4 students visit Quotient Sciences

Drs Peter Scholes (Chief Scientific Officer) and Andrew Lewis (Vice President Pharmaceutical Sciences) and their colleagues hosted year 3 and 4 students to a day at Quotient Sciences. The visit provided students with a unique insight into the role the service sector now plays within the pharmaceutical industry, and the science-based career opportunities which are available in this dynamic environment.

The CDT students gained an overview of how work at Quotient is structured into multidisciplinary project teams to support product development programs for customers. They heard about Quotient’s evolution from a Nottingham University spin-out company in 1990 into a fully integrated global pharma services business with a unique rapid formulation and clinical testing development platform.  Students obtained an insight into how clinical trials are designed, conducted and reported, and how the process of regulatory and ethical approvals work. The head of Project Management (PM) explained the job profile of a PM and showed the project workflows and their checkpoints. The CDT students then had the opportunity to visit the R&D laboratories, view the GMP manufacturing facility as well as the clinical trials unit. The latter was a unique opportunity for the CDT students, as the majority had never visited such facilities before.

In the afternoon, the students had the chance to “speed date” Quotient staff, in the areas of pharmaceutical development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance and project management to find out about job profiles and person specifications.

Dr Peter Scholes concluded the day with discussions on two case studies which gave the students the opportunity to put in context the topics covered during the day.

The CDT would like to thank Quotient Sciences and Peter’s team for organising such a superb and informative day
