PhD project generation Event - Overview
The Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Targeted Therapeutics and Nanomedicine has hosted its PhD project generation event for the 2018 cohort. The event followed the ‘Sandpit’ approach: Participants from different disciplines (academics from both Universities, industry scientists from six companies and students) work together and are encouraged to think outside their normal research interests to create project ideas. The joint ideas help to combine the needs of industry partners, interests of academics and students. Additionally, ideas also need to fit the EPSRC healthcare technologies remit.
‘Sandpit’ meetings of this type encourage sharing of ideas and concepts and provide real opportunities for developing junior scientists. To focus the event and start off the discussions, the CDT analysed research interests and topics using the software ‘well sorted ’ and made the results available prior to the event.
The event consisted of a networking evening do and the actual ideas generation event and was supported by staff, students and the CDT Advisory board. The event was facilitated by Jacqui Hazell, Patrizia Sorgiovanni and Jackie Forbes from Mentora Ltd.
Altogether 83 people attended the evening event and the day event: 18 industry partners, 13 students, 35 academics from UCL and Nottingham, 8 student facilitators, 3 academic facilitators, 2 Advisory board members, 3 professional facilitators and 1 CDT manager.
