Final year student Fabrizio Fina on his CDT experience

Being a CDT student has been an amazing experience for me. I have just started my last year and I have been very happy and satisfied throughout the entire course. During this time, I have been working on 3D Printing of oral formulation supervised by Prof. Simon Gaisford and Prof. Abdul Basit at UCL. Thanks to them I had access to a wide range of 3D printing technologies such as FDM (Fused deposition modelling), SLS (selective laser sintering) and SLA (Stereolithography).

Working on  cutting-edge research gave me the opportunity to publish in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Moreover, I am delighted to be given the opportunity to be part of a recently published book in 3D printing: “3D printing of Pharmaceuticals” with a chapter on “Powder Bed Fusion”.

This year in November, I had the opportunity to attend the AAPS conference in Washington DC. I presented three posters and I have been awarded with the “Best poster abstract Award”.

Being a CDT student allowed me to have connections with industriy. Pfizer is extremely interested in 3D printing and they offered me the opportunity to spend 3 months there during my PhD to further characterize my data, but more importantly to have an industrial insight into such an international company. I felt very lucky when I had the opportunity to present my work within Pfizer, meet people and to build up my network.
