2014 CDT cohort site visit to GSK
2014 Cohort Training Week in London
Students from the 2014 cohort based at both Nottingham and UCL met in London this week for a series of specially designed training sessions. The training week gave students the opportunity to become acquainted with some of the general scientific, developmental and commercial aspects that are involved with the development of protein-based medicines. During the week students worked in groups on an exercise to develop a protein-based medicine, devising and explaining a strategy to develop the assigned protein.
Students were also given talks by Dr Teresa Barata on “Molecular Modeling tools for formulation analysis and development,” Dr Satyanarayana Somavarapu on “Freeze drying,” and Dr Gareth Williams on “Basic immunology 101.” Professor Ajoy Velayudhan, Professor of Bioprocess Engineering and Biotechnology in the Department of Biochemical Engineering at University College London, delivered the keynote address.
In addition, Dr Andrew Theophilus and Dr Rita Majithiya invited the students to visit GlaxoSmithKline in Stevenage. This was the third visit by CDT students to GSK, which has always received very positive feedback..
